Robert A. Schwarz, Psy.D. is a licensed psychologist, clinical member of AAMFT, and an approved consultant in hypnosis. He has organized eight national conferences on treating trauma, four regional conferences on Ericksonian hypnosis, and two international conferences on brief therapy. He is co-author of Posttraumic Stress Disorder: A Clinician's Guide. He has been practicing psychotherapy and supervision in the Philadelphia area for over 20 years.

Tools for Transforming Trauma- By: Robert SchwarzThough this book was written and aimed at professionals in the field of psychology, I enjoyed reading it. I learned some interesting tools and ways that a therapist can help patients and that I can use to help myself. It was written in a clear and relatively easy to read format. I had some questions and things that I needed to look up on the internet in order to fully understand and take in, but I am not a trained professional.Another thing I really enjoyed about this book is the variety of resources in which he quoted and referred to. The bibliography at the back of the book was lengthy, so a lot of research went into this book even though the writer is a psychologist who specializes in trauma for over 20 years.I think anyone who is helping or doing therapy with survivors of trauma and abuse needs to have this in their personal library for reference or have read it a few times. It's definitely one of the better books I have come across for professionals. And it was helpful to me in a lot of ways, and other survivors may find it helpful too.I did however wish that with some concepts and trains of thought that he would have clarified and elaborated a bit more. Even though I know this book was aimed at professionals, I would that chapters 5 onwards had mostly stuff directly meant for therapists and not really something that a patinet could use for self help. So I did find that disappointing. And the last two chapters of the book were completely aimed at therapists and of no use to a patient.**I rate this book as - 4/5 ** I give this a definite buy for a professional, and a must read for survivors who want something more clinical to work on trauma healing and recovery work.P
Tools for Transforming Trauma is the best book I've read on understanding and treating trauma. Dr. Schwarz does a great job in both explaining and integrating the two most crucial issues in this field. The book helps the reader understand the psychological, neurological, and social nature and ramification of trauma in ways that make the many complexities completely comprehensible. It also, and most importantly, provides step-by-step blueprints of the most innovative and powerful tools for change. These include Ericksonian, Neo-Ericksonian, Energy psychology, and other strategies with careful illumination of how to choose, fine-tune, individualize, and use the strategies in each phase of the treatment process. It's clear that Dr. Schwarz is a seasoned and creative therapist who has taken his years of experience and training and put it into language that makes sense to those of us in the trenches.
This book is a must have for anyone in the trauma field. It provides clear, step by step guidelines and demonstrations for some of the most powerful techniques for bringing people to healing. It integrates a multitude of techniques and provides the modern therapist with a toolbox of options to utilize dependent upon the specificaitons of the situation. Dr. Schwarz' 20 years of running conferences and training thousands of the best therapists in the country clearly shows in his careful delivery of every technique presented. Bravo! I eagerly await his next book and utilize his self help tapes with my clients on a regular basis.
Dr. Robert Schwarz is a healer, a teacher, and a multi-dimensional writer. He has found the words and the techniques to guide the therapist in healing the trauma client. This invaluable text is both brilliant in content, readable, clear, and direct. I recommend it!
There are so many books in the trauma field it is hard to know which one to invest precious time reading. I highly recommend this book, for several reasons: 1) it is clearly written in a down-to-earth style, 2) it provides an integrated framework for understanding and working with various experiences of trauma, 3) it offers specific tools for helping people overcome the effects of trauma.
