This is actually a review of the three books of the Fourth Element trilogy (The Midnight Sea, Blood of the Prophet, Queen of Chaos) and the two (so far) books of the Dominion series (The Daemoniac, The Thirteenth Gate), so I am posting this on all five books. I read a lot, but rarely write reviews. In most cases I think it's all been said already, and I'd rather read than write. But I think these books are a unique case. I think Ms. Ross has done a marvellous job of blending real (though altered) history and actual places with mythology and the fantasy and magical elements. It was fun for me to pick out the realities, myths, and allusions in the stories. And as a Sherlock Holmes fan, I really like the way the Dominion series ties the Sherlock Holmes canon, New York City, the gaslight Victorian era, and the fantasy of the Fourth Element series together. I first read the Dominion series books, then the Fourth Element Trilogy. That worked okay, but I recommend reading the Fourth Element trilogy first because some things in the second series will be more clear and relevant. I highly recommend reading all of these. When Ms. Ross adds to these, I will be buying.

I love the interconnected novels and worlds that Kat Ross is creating--the Fourth Element series, which is set in ancient Persia and features warriors fighting demons, blends beautifully with the Dominion Mysteries, which feature warriors fighting demonic forces in late 19th-century England and the U.S. THE THIRTEENTH GATE updates one of my favorite couples from the Fourth Element books, Tijah and her bonded daeva, as they investigate a grisly supernatural murder and get much more than they bargained for. The plot moves quickly, the characters (especially Tijah, or Vivienne as she's known in this world) are delightful, and the creepiness factor is even higher than in previous books, the climactic contest between heroes and monsters being especially horrifying. An afterword hints that the series will next move to Transylvania, where I would imagine the small part of hell that hasn't already broken loose in these novels will do just that. Can't wait!

Great continuation of the series. The story invites you in and makes you fall in love with the heroin who becomes a role model as she fearlessly burns her own path in life and blazes a trail for future heroins to follow. The story is a great weave of the realistic and fantasy fighting the monsters if the dark and the fear that lurks in everyone. The heroine faces her own fear to do what's right and make the world safe for the innocent and unsuspecting.

I didn't think this could be any darker than The Daemoniac, but I was wrong. And I loved it. I adore these characters, particularly John, the cheeky John Watson hiding here in nineteenth century New York. I love the entire series, and I love Kat Ross for dragging us along with her. I'm desperate to revisit them already, particularly Darius, but I'll try and be patient. This book will not disappoint you.

Kat Ross does an excellent job keeping her readers on the edge of their seat. I gladly look forward to more. I had to think about some of the characters but the book is a stand-alone and you need not read others before this one. I am still trying to figure out Balthazar. Memory of getting older.

The problem, for me, with reading a book that is fast-paced, well-written and exciting, with characters I care about, oohs that I always read it too fast, and then it's over, and I'm sad. The Thirteenth Gate moves at a good clip, its paired mysteries, with their paired sleuths, skillfully woven together. And there's just a tiny hint of romance, or rather unspoken love, between each pair--just enough to make the reader want more! Altogether a highly satisfying read, and I just wish there were a dozen more in the series already.

Ross has created another enthralling mystery, with good vs evil fighting over a talisman, key to the gates of hell. Harry and John are back and we meet new (old?) characters from London who bring a depth of knowledge and experience in the fight of their lives. Lively and fast paced.

A few of the characters from "The Fourth Element" come forward, a couple thousand years, to help a couple young sleuths solve a 19th century mystery.
