Sailors are both avid readers and avid writers, and hence there are many well written books on the nautical or 'cruiser' lifestyle of the modern sea gypsy.However, while there are a great many books written upon the subject of outfitting and sailing a modern ocean capable boat, there has been a serious lack of books, almost none until now, dealing with taking the advantages of an ocean capable boat to it's real capabilities as the ultimate survival retreat in the event of a severe, long term crisis.Capt. Simpson's book has done much to fill in that gap. He has actually done lengthy retreats on an ocean capable, family sized boat. That, plus his background both in sailing and a career as a professional mariner in the merchant marine make this a book worth having for anyone who either has a sailboat, or is considering getting one.
It was through my research on both bug out bags and bug out vehicles that I came across The Nautical Prepper by Capt. William Simpson. After reading his material, it became apparent to me that his work is a seminal piece with both thought provoking and practical information for those interested in general emergency preparedness and preparation for the likelihood of a societal worst case scenario.Although, Capt. Simpson has an extensive base of knowledge and resume in ships and navigation, what impressed me most was his philosophical and spiritual tenet that is the foundation for his preparation and survival strategies and approaches; to find solutions that are the least combative and confrontational . While he does find the need to be defensive and tactical, the most extreme responsive measures to a threat should be the last (and most likely) final option.With this in mind however, he definitely addresses the use of boats as a viable means to escape, evade and survive any number of catastrophes that can occur. Thus through boating, it is totally conceivable to live completely off the grid while experiencing an amazing adventure.After reading Nautical Prepper, Capt. Simpson makes a solid argument to considering the water option to escape and avoid any land lock threats. Furthermore, the book advocates a highly mobile living situation which allows for one to either “bug in†or “bug out†safely instead of the more restrictive options of traveling overland for escape or the death trap posed by choosing the bunker solution.As mentioned, I found his information solid and valuable that I incorporated many of his thoughts into my writing and research materials. I would highly recommend anyone serious on emergency preparedness and survivalism to read his book. It will definitely give you another perspective in which to consider.
Interesting little book, but there is nothing here that an experienced sailor would not know. A complete novice would be making an expensive and painful mistake to venture forth on a large sailboat without much experience and training - even if the world was ending as we know it. Interesting reading - buy not 1/100th of what one would have to know (and be practiced at) to actually flee civilization on a cruising boat.
Mr. Simpson has put together a nice book of hints and tips for the use of a sailboat (primarily) as his bug-out vessel.I enjoyed reading his opinion and commentary on the use of a vessel for a prepping 'retreat' - he has many sound ideas and concepts, that he has apparently put together over his years of experience sailing and boating.
An excellent guide to using a boat as a survival platform. You can think of it as the ultimate bug-out vehicle, that intrinsically enables security through physical isolation, while also allowing you to reach unaffected regions for subsequent land-based survival. You can also think if it as a more practical and feasible form of "bug-in" strategy, compared with a bunker death trap, since it is a highly mobile living quarters.This book provides not only an in-depth compendium of practical advice, but also an overview of some of the potential disaster scenarios, with appropriate responses tailored to sea-assisted survival.
The most valid survival concept I have come across. To be complete you will need books and study on sailing and "Sailing the Farm" by Neumeyer.
The book contains lots of good information. Some ideas were new to me, and caused me to consider some ideas I held. Some I disagreed with, but not strongly. Those things I disagreed with were few and far between, like confronting pirates armed with RPSs and Kalashnikovs with very light weaponry. But overall, I would recommend this for nautical preppers as food-for-thought.
Great book with lots of information. I highly recommend reading it for anyone who wants to prep or sail.
