About the Author
Prior to writing novels, Serena Miller wrote for many periodicals, including Woman’s World, Guideposts, Billy Graham’s Decision Magazine, Reader’s Digest, Focus on the Family, Christian Woman, and The Detroit Free Press Magazine. She has spent many years partnering with her husband in full-time ministry and lives on a farm in southern Ohio near a thriving Amish community.Paul Stutzman was born into an Amish family in Holmes County, Ohio. Shortly after his birth, his family left the Amish lifestyle and joined a strict Conservative Mennonite church. Paul continued to live among and mingle with his Amish friends and relatives his entire life, married a Mennonite girl, and remained in the Amish community working and raising a family. He is the author of Hiking Through, a memoir about the Appalachian Trail. He lives in central Ohio and can be found at PaulStutzman.com.

I chose this book for my Book Club without knowing much about it. I absolutely loved it! Serena Miller is a very good storyteller and is great at comparing the typical "English" lifestyle with that of the Amish. I have always been fascinated by the Amish, but I learned more than just facts about them. I feel like I learned a lot of small things that could make me a better parent such as teaching my children to become people of value rather than simply try to make them happy and entertained all the time. I usually check books out from the library, but I am glad I bought this one. We had lots of different things we could discuss at my book club from the differences in education, work ethic, meal customs, use of technology, etc. and how we could apply those lessons to our own lives.
More than Happy is a well written book with much respect given to parents in all walks of life. You will enjoy reading this book even if you are not at a station in your life that you need parenting advice.It is a beautiful blend of story telling and teaching.
There is a lot of useful information about the Amish to be had from this book, That being said, there're an awful lot of the authors own opinions about child-rearing and male-female relationships that takes up way too much space. I just want to know what the Amish think, not what a sort-of-conservative Christian mother of two thinks.
Easy read. Encourages me in parenting my children to Biblical standards rather than cultural ones. I would rather my child grow up to be a person of value than a "happy" person.
I found this book very interesting. This book not only brought some good memories of my own upbringing and how some of my parents values were similar. It also shows how things have changed in our " English World "over the years. This book not only gives what I feel is a good insight how the Amish values help in raising children but it gives a pretty fair insight to parts of the Amish community as well. I have recommended this book to some of my acquaintances and to my daughter.
This was an interesting book to read from a Jewish standpoint, yet there are many similar values between Jewish and Amish families. Love the emphasis on family meals together, extended family relationships etc.
I've lived with Amish who milk by hand and use threshing machines at harvest time with belt driven engines. I've lived with amish who drive skid steers and use machines to milk with. But in both cases I would say that this book does reflect their beliefs. This is a helpful book that can help us to raise not only our children, but our inner child that has been corrupted by society and the marketing that aims to make money without regard for our beings or children.
This book is packed with practical parenting advice, along with insight into Amish culture. It was also a very enjoyable and interesting read.
