First, I have to say the quality of the book itself is amazing. The coloring, the larger print size, binding, and overall print quality is superb. But they never should have changed the translation. I get wanting to get closer to the original and I can see why they changed a lot of the names back to the originals (though it will always be Tiphares to me). That's fine. However, a lot of the dialog became wooden and clunky, and in some cases changed the meaning of the scenes. I'll take a small sample from when Alita first meets Hugo/Yugo in the scene when they're on the roof and he's showing her his favorite view of Tiphares/Zalem as an example.---ORIGINAL TRANSLATIONHugo: Over this way! Check it out! Tiphares... the midair city! Sometimes I just sit here and stare... ... and if I do it long enough, I start to almost believe I could float up there, you know? I bet life up there is great, don't you? I come here a lot-- just to sit and watch. It's my favorite... I've been running wild in this old factory since I was just a kid.Altia: Hee, hee.Hugo: What-- What is it?!Alita: Just looking at you.. at your face.---NEW TRANSLATIONYugo: C'mon, this way! There- That's Zalem! It takes my breath away every single time. When you just stare at it for minutes at a time, you feel it sucking your very soul upward. I wonder what kind of people live up there. When I'm bored, I like coming here to gaze at Zalem. This old empty factory on the edge of town's been my secret playground since I was a kid.Altia: Hee hee!Yugo: What? What are you starin' at?Alita: It's funnier to look at your face.---I kept the punctuation as close as possible. As you can see the new version is awkward, stilted, and kills any sense of personality from Hugo/Yugo. In the original its easy to tell that Alita is smitten with Hugo and thinks his wondering gaze is cute. In the new translation it sounds like she's making fun of him for it. And why would Yugo ever explain where they are in dialog when they're both right there and its literally drawn on the page?I could forgive it if it was just one or two scenes, but the entire book is strewn with awkward phrasing like this. It almost like they dropped the original text into Google Translate and just went with it. It's is even more confusing because the Last Order and Mars Chronicle books that were published by Kodansha don't have this issue.Maybe it'll be fine for you if you're brand new to the series, but for anyone who's read the originals, you're in for a hard read.

At last Alita gets a nice full size HC release. I read the original comics as they were released back in the day. But I sold them a decade ago or so, and did not buy the smaller versions. It was great to read again after all these years and to see the color pages in color for the first time. Paper quality is a heavy coated glossy stock with the color pages being printed on even heavier paper. Print quality is a 10 its never looked better. Story quality is exceptional, one of the few epic manga sagas to rival Akira, with lots of surprises revealed as the epic progresses. I was surprised at how well it reads today. I look forward to buying the next book which starts the MOTORBALL story, long live Jashugan! And I just saw an Alita trailer... can Alita beat makaku's grind cutter?

I've been waiting for a re-release of this series for nearly ten years, since it was so difficult to get a hold of the paperbacks in a decent condition and at a fair price. After getting this book in the mail and seeing what it had to offer, I'm so glad I waited til now to buy the manga! The book is gorgeous; the hard cover is nice and sturdy and the image is nice and crisp. The pages on the inside are on nice glossy paper and the color pages that were added in are beautifully made. The re-translation is an improvement as well, the content is still the same but the lines from the characters now feel more authentic and the dialogue flows much more smoothly and coherently than previous versions. Just a heads up though, this does read from right to left like a traditional manga. Also the book ends just one chapter away from the conclusion of the second story arc, which is odd but my guess is it was done on purpose to entice people to get the second book. But with this high level of quality and an already great story to boot I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you get this if you're a fan of the series, a fan of anime/manga, a fan of cyber-punk/post apocalyptic stories, or just want some new that's printed in high quality. Can't wait for book two next year!

Whether or not the Alita film will be any good, we can at least say it brought form this new edition of the manga. Which for people unfamiliar with the source material like me is a very good thing. The story is quick and energized yet gives enough time for moments to sink in, letting the plot and characters breath.Characters are also fun to read about. With a 70/30 mixture of murderous/ insane or nice/ indifferent. I especially enjoy the dynamic between Alita and Vash the Stampede.....wait....i mean Dr Ido, who disovers and rebuilds her. She wants to protect and do right by him, but doesnt want to be his object. She wants to be her own person while still having a connection. Really drives home the parent-child metaphorThe book itself is high quality, with great glossy pages and an exquise hardcover. While personally i would prefer a normal papaerback omnibus, a more economic choice usually, i dont regret getting this. In fact i'll probably be getting the rest too
