Collects Ultimate Spider-Man 1-7Osborn Industries creates a new wonder drug "Oz". A spider infused with the drug bites nerdy high school student Peter Parker. Norman Osborn orders his people to keep an eye on Peter, and based on what they see, he decides to inject himself with Oz himself, and consequently turns into a green-skinned horned monster who can throw fireballs. Wrestling, thief, Uncle Ben, you know the drill. Oh, and Peter's father happened to have been working on a special adhesive formula, which Peter finishes (the web fluid). From what little I've read, the other Ultimate Universe books involve extreme, exaggerated versions of the Marvel characters, but Ultimate Spider-Man so far is basically starting the character over again in a modern setting.

The Ultimate Spider-Man comic has received great reviews for a reason; it's terrific! The art, writing and characters are wonderful. I love the contemporary take on this classic franchise. It also works wonderfully on my iPad Kindle app. I can view the whole page at once, or click on a cell and view them individually by swiping with my finger (my preferred way of reading). I am enjoying this so much I will probably purchase the entire series. Highly recommended!

I don't want to call this an "answer to the criticism" but I will address why I thoroughly enjoyed this book in spite of some of the negativity surrounding it. The ultimate goal being to possibly interest you into reading the story and creating an opinion of your own.By far the number one issue fans of the series had was the pacing of Gwen Stacy's death along with the battle against Carnage. In my opinion the casualness of it all is what added the most to Ultimate Spidey. Gwen's death isn't out of the ordinary. It doesn't get a build up to it because death is part of Peter's world now. Things can only get worse. This isn't just a fantasy he's living out or a game he's playing. This is his life. The life of a superhero where tragedy will happen without a moments notice. Where drama takes a backseat to consequences. He made a mistake and someone paid the price for it. That someone just happened to be another person who was very close to him. As much as people like seeing an angry Peter Parker that's never been the core of his character. He's not a rage filled sociopath looking for revenge. He's a self destructive time bomb who loathes his conscience for making him miserable. As far as he's concerned he's the one who killed Uncle Ben. He's the one who killed Gwen Stacy. He's the one who can't stop hurting Aunt May and Mary Jane. He's 15.When you're 15 and everything is your fault, and you're confronted by the product of your own negligence (Carnage) your immediate instinct isn't to annihilate the seemingly immortal abomination of science trying to kill you. In my opinion Peter wasn't even there for that fight. His mind was still trying to cope with the realization that this wasn't the first, and won't be the last tragedy to befall him. That being Spider-Man won't get easier and day by day the odds of him hurting another loved one is increasing. It was only after the fight that he came to which is why the story was told through a flashback. It's not that the comic itself is dumbing down. In fact, it's quite the opposite. Bendis is leaving more and more to subtext for you to interpret for yourself. He doesn't want to build up to a situation where he'll tell you how to feel during the climax and end definitively. He wants you to take what you will and decide what to get from it. This is volume 11 out of 22 and is a great turning point for the character.

Ultimate Spider-Man #6 Venom is all the hype it's made out to be. Brian Bendis just keeps webbing out in strands of silk great work on ol' spidey taking him to places he has never before or imagined impossible. This new Venom has a greater impact on him who is more closer and personal,to him than ever before and this new modern day interpretation is brilliant adaption as ever of the orignal story arc.And therefore venom has always been one of Spider-man's most intriguing and formidably puzzling villanious foes and he's no different here in this new age adaptation of the classic wall crawler.Who is well and truly back, with a new look and costume now to go with it.And this story of course take place in meeting with his childhood friend Eddie Brock, who then starts hanging around him for it.In which eddie then unwittingly tells his secret to Parker about his parents who worked their whole lives to find a cure for cancer,as biosuit enigneers for in which Parker tries to finish the work off for him but unfortunetly instead gets a whole lot more than he bargained for sadly because he is now attached to and controlled by this seething alien sentient black liquid being for in which he tries to get rid of it as a new costume and then of course gets reacquainted with his old previous friend Eddie who tries to steal the suit off from him and becomes his new sworn arch enemy Venom. And this is where the more personal aspect of Venom comes in for Parker but for not Venom of course. The artwork in the end is fantastic and the quality of Mark Bagley's work just keeps getting better visually, for in which it is truly a shame that he will no longer be illustrating top notch graphic novels. The characterization in this graphic novel is exceptional and we see aspects of Mary Jane, Eddie and Gwen that are new that are new that we haven't seen before for in which again as we start to get and up close feel of Parker and Nick Fury. There is no doubt that this is one of the Ultimates books by far and the best of them and venom is undoubtedly the perfect match for Spider-man. The dialogue is realistically believable, even amusing at times for in which Parker is well known for his smart witty wise crack one liners that is to say it is for anyone wanting to get into this comic book lore there's no better place to start here with this new graphic novel series called:Venom which is not the last of the series and just grabbing this and any of Mark Millar's incredibly published and Ultimate books in the end is of course a great start to this new series for reading in readers who already familar with the wall crawler himself spiderman.Great reading great art work in the end all in all a incredible book to behold and read as a graphic novel saga!
