This book was generally pretty good. It was definitely loaded with important information, and I can see myself flipping through it over and over between now and my trip in six months. However, this guide is not without its faults. Here are some pros and cons.Pros:The information is incredibly valuable and (seems to be) accurateThe rules/guidelines included are new material that cannot be found elsewhereChapters/delineations are generally pretty useful and accurateCons:A lot of information is duplicated word-for-word at least once within the book, making it confusing or tedious at timesThere is a lot of snarky rudeness on the part of the author - in a book about politeness and good manners - to the point of being distractingWhile I was extremely impressed with the depth and breadth of the information presented, I was continuously put off by the rudeness of the author. Some comments were simply off-color, but others were downright accusatory. It seemed that these may have been included for humor's sake, but they did not read to me as funny and instead seemed arrogant or mean. Word to the wise: if you write a book about minding your manners and being respectful, a good rule of thumb is to make sure your wording responds in kind.
There's nothing worse than feeling like a stranger in a strange land...except perhaps unintentionally acting like a jerk and insulting the locals! We're currently planning our first visit to Japan. Amy's book is making us feel much more prepared, and polite. The book is well organized and clearly written. The book has answered all the questions we had, plus quite a few we never thought to ask. As a bonus, it offers a dash of good humor. I'll have to report back when we return from our trip, but we feel like this book is doing a great job of preparing us to be happy travelers and considerate visitors.

If you are planning a trip to Japan, buy this book. If you are moving to Japan, buy this book. If you want to understand and offer great service to Japanese visitors to your community, buy this book. It will add to enjoyment of your trip, smooth your interactions with the people you meet, and save you from potential embarrassment. You’ll have confidence that you know what to do when shopping, visiting points of interest, eating out with friends, in business meetings and much more. You’ll understand the difference between a hotel and a ryokan, what to do with that wet umbrella, and how to properly say goodbye. Best yet, rather than being an observer, you'll be immersed in Japanese culture and isn’t that the best part of travel? The author is a long-time resident of Japan. She understands and explains things that visitors wonder about but have no way of finding out without living within the culture as she has. She tells you what to do or to not do and explains the cultural context, so that you can “wing it†in new situations. The book is portable and easy to read. It’s to the point, with some amusing comments to keep it light and fun. Immediately after finishing this book I posted it to several groups and sent links to people who are going to Japan. It’s that good.
With playful finger wagging, Amy Chavez tells us how to mind our Ps and Qs in Japan. When reasons behind different customs can be explained, Chavez does so, but in some cases a good-natured shrug is the best one can do in a thousand-year culture. Fun and instructive. Etiquette is serious business in Japan and loads of tomes even detail which foot should be placed first when entering a room, but for a fun starter that gets your attention, Amy gently takes the reader through some of the first steps.
What a great book! As someone who lived in Japan for five years, and still travels there frequently, I was looking forward to reading “Amy’s Guide...†more for Amy’s humorous style than because I expected to learn anything. While the humorous phrasing was there as expected, I was surprised by how much about Japanese etiquette I didn’t know (example: don’t walk on someone else’s tatami mat in bare feet). I kept asking my wife, who is Japanese, “is it true that in Japan you shouldn’t...?†And every time she confirmed that Amy was correct and I had been misbehaving all of these years. So in short, this is a very useful guide for people visiting Japan for the first time, a good refresher for those who go frequently, and an entertaining read for anyone at all.
Navigating the complexities of Japanese etiquette has always been a challenge for first-time visitors to Japan. Wonderful, then, to get a hold of Amy Chavez’s guide which lays it bare—simply, intelligently and with humour. There are a few aspects I would disagree with, about nightlife, snack bars and drinking out, but having lived in Japan for 20+ years, I’ve discovered there is more than one way to skin a catfish. Chavez includes in the opening pages a quote which alludes to the fact that this country's etiquette, its manner systems and mysterious (often maddening) nuances, all have their roots in the ‘way of the samurai’. That makes sense! Recommend.
I got my copy of Amy's Guide to Best Behavior in Japan a few days ago. Over the years I have bought every book on Japanese etiquette I could find. This one beats them all, Amy Chavez has written an excellent book every traveler should read.Never assume what is polite at home will be polite when you go to another country.
